If using XeLaTex and want to use the authentic font then choose Leo's. You can use helvet package instead. The script was part of TeXLive until the version. Ubuntu users should have it already installed. I struggled with this forever.

Finally found an article that showed me these two lines of code:. This answer only loads a Helvetica clone, not true Arial. If you need true Arial for whatever reason this won't work. Sign up to join this community.

Leo Liu Leo Liu I'm using Ubuntu Level1Coder: Well, Arial is a commercial font. You use Linux, but there's no Arial in linux distribution. Leo: But there is: corefonts. Most cases, helvet package will suffie. After experimentation, I found under Ubuntu Synaptic Package named ttf-mscorefonts-installer. After installing this, Leo's answer works! And also because of frequent use of Chinese, XeLaTex seems to be the best tool to handle Chinese characters.

I guess it would be a little difficult for newbies. Downloaded all fonts with this command sudo getnonfreefonts-sys -a Arial is rendering in my PDF now, awesome and thanks!

A quick follow up on Leo Liu's comment: this solution worked for me in RStudio compiling with pdfLaTeX without the need to install any packages manually.Click here to download the full example code. Matplotlib has the option to use LaTeX to manage all text layout. This option is available with the following backends:. The LaTeX option is activated by setting text. Text handling with matplotlib's LaTeX support is slower than matplotlib's very capable mathtextbut is more flexible, since different LaTeX packages font packages, math packages, etc.

The results can be striking, especially when you take care to use the same fonts in your figures as in the main document.

The executables for these external dependencies must all be located on your PATH. There are a couple of options to mention, which can be changed using rc settings. Here is an example matplotlibrc file:. The first valid font in each family is the one that will be loaded.

If the fonts are not specified, the Computer Modern fonts are used by default. All of the other fonts are Adobe fonts. Times and Palatino each have their own accompanying math fonts, while the other Adobe serif fonts make use of the Computer Modern math fonts.

Therefore, these characters will behave differently depending on the rcParam text. The axis labels include Unicode text:. In order to produce encapsulated postscript files that can be embedded in a new LaTeX document, the default behavior of matplotlib is to distill the output, which removes some postscript operators used by LaTeX that are illegal in an eps file. This step produces results which may be unacceptable to some users, because the text is coarsely rasterized and converted to bitmaps, which are not scalable like standard postscript, and the text is not searchable.

One workaround is to set ps. A better workaround, which requires Poppler or Xpdfcan be activated by changing the ps. This alternative produces postscript without rasterizing text, so it scales properly, can be edited in Adobe Illustrator, and searched text in pdf documents. See Environment Variables and Setting environment variables in windows for details. You may need to install some of the extra packages to get all the goodies that come bundled with other latex distributions.

Some progress has been made so matplotlib uses the dvi files directly for text layout. In the future, a latex installation may be the only external dependency. There are hundreds - if not thousands - of typefacesor font families. Common examples include TimesCourierand Helvetica. These families can generally be grouped into three main categories: serifsans serifand monospaced.

LaTeX commands generally refer to these with the shorthand rmsfand tt respectively. It contains serif, sans serif, and monospaced fonts, each available in several weights and optical sizes.

Which is the most similar/closest font to Helvetica in Word?

The bodies of LaTeX documents are set in Roman serif type by default, but this can be changed by setting the family default:. Text may be emphasized more heavily through the use of boldface, particularly for keywords the reader may be trying to find when reading the text.

As bold text is generally read before any other text in a paragraph or even on a page, it should be used sparingly. It may also be used in place of italics when using sans-serif typefaces to provide a greater contrast with unemphasized text. Typefaces usually come in various styles and weights, such as italic and bold. The following table lists the commands you will need to access typical font shapes.

Generally, one should prefer the commands over their equivalent switches because the former automatically corrects spacing immediately following the end of the selected style. You may have noticed the absence of underline - this is because underlining is a byproduct of the typewriter era, and is not recommended when bold and italic type is available instead. In the likely case that this is not your intent, use the normalem option, i.

These commands change the size within a given scope. It will work for most parts of the text. These commands cannot be used in math mode. Note that not every document class has unique sizes for all of the above size commands. Points in TeX follow the standard American point system in which 1 pt is approximately 0. The standard point size used in most modern computer programs known as the desktop publishing point or PostScript point has 1 pt equal to approximately 0. For example:. If you are using the latex or pdflatex engines, you may get a warning similar to the following:.

This is because these older engines only support a fixed set of sizes - between 5 and 17 point.

When he designed Computer Modern, Knuth created individual font files for these sizes, each with stroke widths and spacing optimized for that particular size. To avoid distorting them, scaling these fonts is disabled by default. This issue is avoided when using lualatex or xelatexwhich use Latin Modern - a vectorized version of Computer Modern - as the default font family.

This still provides individual files at each of the original optical sizesbut will automatically scale the closest one when asked for an arbitrary size. When TeX was originally designed in the late s, vector-based fonts didn't exist in any common format - PostScript wouldn't be released until The fontspec package is extremely configurable. See the manual [3] for details, but some basics are covered below.

Different weights and styles of a given typeface are usually stored as separate font files. A typical typeface might offer four files to represent its normal weight, italicsboldand bold italics. Given a typefaces's name, fontspec can generally deduce the names of the individual files.

However, many typefaces come in more than two weights—some versions of Futurafor example, comes in lightbookmediumdemiboldand extra bold weights. Sometimes small caps are stored as separate files as well. We might want to hand-pick weights to achieve a certain look or better match the weights of other fonts in our document.

Continuing to use Futura as an example, say we want to use the "book" weight for our default weight, "demi" for bold, and the font files are named:. The OpenType OTF format allows type designers to embed font features that can be turned on and off, such as:. All of these features can be turned on and off using different fontspec options. If we wanted to set our body text in Linux Libertine with oldstyle, proportionally-spaced figures, for example, we might set up our fonts as follows:.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

Graphic Design Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for Graphic Design professionals, students, and enthusiasts. It only takes a minute to sign up. I guess I'm looking for something that will be a close match in most of its shapes but will have enough points of difference to make people OK, other designers wonder what I've used.

Please include a visual example if possible, and include some reasons why each font would be a good choice; I'm after a smallish number of well-thought-out suggestions, and definitely not a bare list. I Ryan, whom is editing this asked what is meant by dated. This was the response, Michael Lai gave me:. There have been questions about free alternatives to Helvetica and also similar fonts to Helvetica Neue, but the answers were based on available fonts from at least a couple years ago and I would like to know if there have been changes or new fonts since.

Also, it is best to get a visual comparison between fonts if possible e. And as Philip Regan already pointed out :. Both have the same Helveticy firmness in the capital letters. Both also come in different flavours. I like Myriad, and I've been using it a lot lately in my layouts.

It is what Apple is currently using for all of its header text in their branding, and by casual observation I see it a lot in advertising in the UK. I think it offers the same readability and clean style as Helvetica, but with a bit of character that is more restrained than some of the others you mention in your question so it doesn't stand out too much.

A good Myriad font will also offer nearly as many weights as Helvetica, so it has a lot of versatility. UPDATE: I did a quick web search slow morning and came across an good article full of Helvetica alternatives that reminded me of some excellent alternatives that we use in my company's books all the time:. I'm a Windows user, so I end up relying on this one quite a lot. The only downside is that you're limited to Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic and their condensed varieties, so if you're looking for a variety in weight, this might not be the one for you.

If you want a free alternative that's pretty robust, try Roboto :.

Here's a comparison between the two - to be clear, this is Google's Helvetica, and while I still prefer the original, this is a nice alternative. And, it looks great on a screen, which isn't always the case with OSX's Helveticas. It also comes with a Condensed and Slab variant as well. If you would like a paid alternative, try Neue Haas Grotesk :.

Here's some comparisons between the two. I've not ever used this one personally but it looks great and is a robust font set. Dalton Maag made their own version apparently out of a love for Univers and a hatred for Helvetica, as this Creative Review article details called Aktiv Grotesk :. Finally, one more I wanted to add in is Akzidenz Grotesk - it's sort of the father of Helvetica so it's worthy of inclusion BQ version shown below, available here :. However, if you're looking for something that's more of a cousin than a brother or son, they might fit the bill.

There's a few hints, but not a lot of information in your question as to why you're wanting a Helvetica-like typeface but not Helvetica. You want something "generic" looking? But yet you want type aficionados to wonder what you chose? Sounds like conflicting goals.
